Flowing With Tradition ~ Street Library ~ October 2024
This Yellow Box titled, ‘Flowing with Tradition’ was designed and created for the KindiKids Centre now open in Five Dock, NSW 2046.
Painted, Glossed and Varnished on Metal.
This artwork is beautifully dedicated to the Wangal People, custodians of the land now known as Five Dock, one of the 29 tribes of the Eora Nation. Through the Wangal People’s connection to the waterways, this design represents the to Burramattagal (now Parramatta River) and its connection to the land and sea.
My artwork reflects the stories of our ancestors, who navigated the water in their boats, surrounded by eels and fish that are a strong part of our culture and survival. At the heart of my design, the waves symbolise the flow of the waterways, enveloping an Indigenous elder in a boat—a powerful reminder of the wisdom and history carried through generations.
Surrounding the elder are totems of sea life, representing the deep respect and connection Aboriginal culture holds for the land. The lotus leaves around the artwork create a metaphor for the children at KindiKids as they forge their own paths. Just as leaves branch away from the lotus, the children are nurtured and guided by the Kindikids teachers—the lotus—before beginning their journey into the wider world.
The sides of the box feature spirals, traditional Indigenous symbols of waterholes, connecting the land and water. These spirals include drawings of baby hands and feet, signifying the importance of curiosity, growth, and creating one’s unique path as the children explore, learn, and evolve every day.
This design is a celebration of the timeless relationship between land, water, and community, and a reflection of the shared journey of growth, discovery, and connection experienced at Kindikids Preschool. It was a pleasure creating something so meaningful for a beautiful centre and community.
